I've been getting into cold water every Sunday at sunrise with a community of fellow dippers for just over a year. The first few times I drove to the Sausalito Bay in the dark hours of the morning, I felt like I was doing this totally crazy thing. But the deep pull to be in water and in community with a group of women was strong enough to get me out of bed. And then, the water changed me. I learned my own strength and joy and that trying new things is scary and hard and deeply rewarding. That if I can get into cold water on a winter morning, I can be a beginner and be scared in many other parts of my life. It feels amazing to be a beginner at 40 and realize how many things I want to experience for the first time. How alive it makes me feel.
